GRADE REFORM COMMITTEE

In 2019, the Grade Reform Committee was created as a sub-committee of the Deep Learning and Innovation Steering Committee to review grading and assessment at the Secondary level. The goal of this group was to examine, create, and implement grading and assessment practices to make them more accurate, meaningful, equitable, and learning-focused over a multi-year period. This committee has been comprised of over 50 representatives of all partner groups, including parents, students, counselors, administrators, as well as middle and high school teachers

The committee adopted the following Mission Statement to reflect its work:

Assessment in the SRVUSD is a tool to provide consistent, meaningful, and accurate feedback that reflects progress towards mastery of specific and required standards to inform students, parents, and teachers about student learning.

During the 2025-26 school year, the committee's recommendations and proposed changes will be brought to the Board of Education and shared with parents/caretakers, staff, and students for feedback through Forums and surveys.

The committee will continue to meet throughout the 2025-26 school year to refine the suggested changes to Board Policy and Administrative Regulation based on input received.at Parent and Student Forums and in a Grading and Assessment survey.  The goal is to bring forward revised BP and AR to the Board for approval in Spring 2026.

Grading and Assessment policy and practice - Proposed Revisions

Grading and Assessment policy and practice - Proposed Revisions

Based on Grade Reform Committee recommendations, SRVUSD looks to update its current policies and practices around grading and assessment in grades 6-12, for three primary purposes:
  • To ensure that grades in SRVUSD are an impartial, consistent, and accurate reflection of a student’s learning towards District-Wide Essential Standards
  • To ensure consistency of a grade’s meaning throughout the District
  • To encourage time, choice, and feedback for students

Highlights of Proposed Changes for Middle and High School

Grading plays a critical role in your child’s education. To better align District policy and practice with current educational research and standards, below are a few of the proposed changes:
  • Grades based solely on academic achievement - factors such as behavior, effort, and work habits will be reported separately
  • Clear, District-wide definitions for each grade (A, B, C, D, F, I, P, NP, NM)
  • Removal of plus (+) and minus (-) from the grading scale
  • Emphasis on timely, descriptive feedback and multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery (Time, Choice, Feedback)
  • Revised Add/Drop timelines for secondary courses
Elementary grading will remain unchanged.
