Student Board Member

In order to provide student input and involvement, the Board shall include one student board member selected in accordance with procedures approved by the Board.
 
The SRVUSD Board of Education believes in the power of the student voice and that it is important to seek out and consider students' ideas, viewpoints and reactions. In order to amplify the student voice and provide an opportunity for an SRVUSD high school student, the SRVUSD Board of Education is engaged in the process of identifying a student board member.
 
Recommended Criteria:
  • 11th & 12th graders
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Community Involvement
  • Communicative Skills
  • Ability to Commit to the Responsibilities of the Position
 
Student Board Member role:

Attends all of the SRVUSD Student Senate meetings to gather feedback to present during school board meetings. The Student Board Member casts a preferential vote at the Board meeting and shares the insight of student senators during open session.  The Student Board Member collaborates with the Student Chair of Student Senate to create the Student Senate Agenda and attends all meetings. The Student Member works and talks to their respective principal.  The student Board Member is ultimately responsible for working as a liaison between the senate and the district and for sharing student voice that informs decision making.  
 
2024-25 Student Board Member:
 
At the June 11, 2024 Board of Education Meeting, the Board took action to seat Travis Hodges as the Student Board Member for the 2024-25 school year.
 
Travis Hodges is a senior at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. As a member of the District Board of Education, he serves as a liaison between the SRVUSD student body of over 30,000 students and the school board, advocating for the wants and needs of K-12 students across the District.
 
Travis is a passionate advocate for education reform, having spent the last three years of high school working to bridge the divide between student needs and legislative policy. Through his connection with various advocacy organizations, he aims to leverage his background in policy to champion an education system that empowers all students.
 
In addition to his advocacy work, Travis loves playing sports, spending time with friends and family, and being involved in the community. His favorite local outdoor spaces are Shell Ridge and Las Trampas Regional Park.

2024-25 Student Board Member Application Process
 
  1. Applications open on Wednesday, March 27 and close on Friday, April 12, 2024
  2. Applications are sent to the school site administrator for review
  3. The school site will choose the top five candidates from each school
  4. The school site will conduct a student vote with the student body
  5. The top two candidates from each school will have three minutes to present to the student senate about why they would like to be the Student Board Member for the 2024-25 school year at the Student Senate Meeting on 5/13/24
  6. The Student Senate will select up to five candidates and those candidates will interview with the Superintendent, Board President, Board Vice President, ESC representative and the current Student Board Member
